Phillip Crane eventually marries Eloise Bridgerton in the Books. However, in the Netflix he is currently married to Marina Thompson.

History[]

Phillip is the second son of Sir Thomas Crane. Growing up, he was both verbally and physically abused by his father, but his brother, George, was kind to him. When Phillip was 12, Thomas was so furious when he fell off his horse, he whipped Phillip; the beating left Phillip with permanent scars on his back.

Phillip went to Cambridge where he did boxing and studied botany, planning to be a scholar and live far away from his father. In his second year, though, George died at Waterloo, making Phillip the heir to his father's baronetcy. Sir Thomas died two weeks after George, and Phillip inherited the baronetcy, becoming Sir Phillip. Phillip was relieved to be rid of his father's presence, and even burned a stick that Thomas used to regularly beat him with.

George was engaged to Marina Thompson at the time of his death; to honor his brother's commitment, Sir Phillip married Marina in George's place. They became parents to twins Amanda and Oliver by the next year. Marina, though, struggled with depression, and Phillip tried to help her. When Marina didn't get any better, Phillip finally gave up and started using his botany studies to help his land and the baronetcy prosper, at the same time, trying to manage his duties of a father.

1823

While working in his greenhouse, Phillip saw Marina walking towards the lake on their property, and realized she intended to kill herself by drowning. He pulled her out of the lake before she could drown to her death, but she caught a fever. Philip stayed by her side, caring for her, giving her fever remedies, and forcing her to eat, but Marina succumbed to the illness and ends up dying three days later. Philip knows that he must find another women to be the mother of his children. His main priority in a new wife is that she has a happy disposition.

Following Marina's death, he receives a letter from Eloise Bridgerton, Marina's cousin (in the book), who expresses her condolences through the letter. This eventually leads to them maintaining communication through letter correspondence for a year - without ever meeting in person.

1824

Phillip was at wit's end with his children after they played multiple pranks on governesses and nurses, scaring them off. Feeling they needed a mother figure in their life — and not having too many options — he decided to propose to Eloise. He enjoyed their correspondences so he sent her a letter with an invitation to visit to him at Romney Hall to see if they would suit. He never heard back, and assumed Eloise rejected his offer. He was surprised when Eloise arrived at his doorstep over a month later unannounced, but was immediately besotted by her beauty.

Anthony, Benedict, Colin, and Gregory Bridgerton discover that Eloise is staying with Sir Phillip and barge into Romney Hall. Anthony tells Eloise that they must marry in order to protect her reputation. Sir Philip and Eloise marry within the next week.
